Health Benefits of Yucca

(Pronounced U-KA)


Yucca is a healthy, fat-free & gluten-free root vegetable that has a brown outer skin and is white on the inside.  Yucca is high in Vitamins C, B & A as well as calcium, phosphorus, potassium and iron, and it’s higher in fiber and potassium than potatoes! 

There are properties in the Yucca that can help arthritis and rheumatism due to the plants’ high content of steroid saponins, which are precursors to cortisone, and act as an anti-inflammatory.  Diuretics and emetics are commonly made from both the root and leaves of the Yucca. 

Did you know that you can consume the Yucca Root as you would a potato?  Yucca is delicious baked, boiled or fried.  Add it to your favorite soup.

Yucca is native to South America, in the Amazon Basin of Brazil.  It was one of the 1st cultivated plants in the western hemisphere. This tropical root is referred to as cassava, manioc, and sweet potato tree & tapioca plant. It’s now widely cultivated in California, Arizona, Nevada, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines & Africa.  Native Americans, Mexicans and Indians have used the Yucca Root for centuries to treat a wide variety of maladies, especially headaches, arthritis, rheumatism, and gonorrhea.
